Fabergé Friday

Except for the Imperial Easter Eggs, and the Kelch Eggs, Fabergé also created a few eggs for a small number of select private clients. One of these eggs is the "Blue Enameled Ribbed Egg", or "Rabbit Egg", which was made sometime between 1885-1891!

This egg is enameled translucent royal blue, decorated with green, red and yellow gold, and topped with an Imperial crown set with sapphires and diamonds. The surprise consists of a little rabbit made of aquamarine, with ruby eyes. The original surprise was probably made of moonstone though. Although the egg itself is by Fabergé, there are doubts about the crown and the rabbit, and it is suspected that the egg - as it looks today - has gone through several changes.

In 1921 the "Blue Enameled Ribbed Egg" was bought by Alexander Tillander, a Finish jeweller. Now the egg can be found in the Estate of the late Stavros S. Niarchos, in Paris.

  1. I love the royal blue and gold so much Miss Meadows! My favourite football team, Chelsea currently play in a blue and gold strip and this egg is so similar to it that I think it's the reason I love it so much, I absolutely adore this egg!
