Fabergé Friday

The egg shape comes back now and again in Fabergé's creations, and here comes an egg-shaped box. It was made by workmaster Mikhail Perkhin, sometime between 1896 and 1903!

Fabergé was very influenced by the tradition of hardstone carving in Russia, and this egg is carved out of Rhodonite, a form of striated pink marble. The hinge is made of gold and decorated with a diamond-set fleur de lis. The top of the egg also has a diamond-set decoration. The egg now belongs in the Royal Collection.

Since it's Easter, and eggs have a big part in this celebration, here is another Fabergé egg pendant! It was made by workmaster Feodor Afanasiev, around the year 1900!

The little - 1'' (2.5 cm) tall - egg is made of gold, covered in translucent green enmel over a guilloché ground. Around the middle runs a band of opaque white enamel, decorated with green leaves and red cherries. The price for the pendant is 17,000 USD, and you find it at John Atzbach Antiques!

It's not one of the Imperial Easter Eggs, but it's still a pretty Fabergé egg-shaped box! Made around the year 1900!

The egg is made of gold, covered in pink enamel over a guilloché ground. On it's sides sits rose-cut diamonds, from which hangs crossed laurel swags. The top of the lid is set with a domed rock crystal, surrounded by rose-cut diamonds. To open the egg you use the cabochon emerald thumbpiece seen in the middle. The size of the egg-box is 1.6'' x 1.1'' (4 x 2.7 cm), and it was acquired by Queen Mary, sometime before 1920. Now it's part of the Royal Collection.

There are many, many Fabergé egg pendants left to go. So here comes another one - made by workmaster Henrik Wigström, sometime between 1908 and 1917!

The egg is covered in pale lilac enamel over a guilloché ground. Around the center leaps a matte gold band of finely chased acanthus leaves with white opaque enamel borders.

The size of the pendant is 13/16'' (2 cm), which is bigger than the usual Fabergé egg pendants - as you can see in the comparison picture above. The price for it is 18,500 USD, and it's for sale at Romanov Russia.

There are many Fabergé egg pendants out there, and here comes another one, made by workmaster Feodor Afanasiev, around the year 1900!

This little egg 1/2'' (1.3 cm) high, is covered in white enamel over a wavy engine turned ground. In the center on one side of the egg sits a red enameled cross. If I was a doctor or a nurse, this would certainly end up on my Christmas wish list! It is time to start writing those now you know... And this Friday's Fabergé object is - a hat pin! Made by workmaster August Hollming, around 1890!

As you can see, Fabergé's famous eggs were used for many different things - even as hat pins. This 6'' (15.2 cm) long pin is made of gold, with it's egg-shaped head covered in translucent mauve enamel over a hatched surface. Around the base of the egg sits a chased leaf collar, and at it's top a diamond set terminal. For 14,000 USD it can get a new home at any (rich) hat lover. Get it here!
